Screen printed tea towel - Cloud sweeping lady 扫天婆
In the rural part of northwest China, whenever it rains, people create a paper cutting of the Cloud Sweeping Lady to pray for good weather. The Cloud Sweeping Lady is drawn with a lotus flower on her head and brushes or brooms in her hands. She sweeps away the clouds to bring back the sunshine. The first mention of her dates back over 800 years ago in a poem from the Yuan Dynasty.
In ancient China, people also prayed to her for fertility, weaving a prayer for prosperity. The Cloud Sweeping Lady found her way to Japan too, where she eventually became the Teru teru bōzu. The Cloud Sweeping Lady's story travels across time and different places, showing how people find comfort and hope in her varied forms.
I took inspiration from the papercutting of cloud sweeping lady and designed a pattern with papercutting collage. I use the collage as the positive in screen printing and printed the tea towels by hand.
The tea towel is 100% organic cotton. There is no plastic packaging.
